On today’s YarnCraft, Liz & Zontee talk about resources for patterns. Whether they’re free or for sale, online or off, we talk about where and how to find the patterns you’re searching for. Liz & Zontee also share tips on how to self-publish patterns, get published in an online magazine, and even build a following and get a book deal.

Online resources discussed, in addition to LionBrand.com, include these aggregating sites:

Online magazines discussed include:

Zontee then interviews Melanie Falick, editorial director of STC Craft and author of Weekend Knitting about the experience of publishing books, tips for those who want to become published, upcoming books from STC Craft, and of course, her book. It’s an interview from our ongoing series of designer interviews recorded at Vogue Knitting Live.

Then on Stash This: Ideas for Your Crafting Life, we continue with the pattern theme, talking about tools that will make organizing and using your patterns easier. From binders and magazine boxes to wet erase markers and pattern magnets, we’ll get you up to speed on tools for keeping track of your patterns.

Great podcast today ~ thank you so much. As a self-publishing designer it crucial to get the word out about your designs but in a professional format. I use my blog to promote myself as well as FaceBook, Twitter and Raverlry. I have found that the best form of letting people know about what I do is from word of mouth. I use this same thought to promote designers who have fabulous creations. The more we talk about each others work, the more we become known. Most important, don’t give up and follow your dream!

I’m new to crocheting and loved your ideas and tips about how to handle the patterns while crocheting/knitting. One thing that has helped me as a newbie is writing the special stitches instructions out on a post it when completing a pattern from a magazine. I was forever flipping back to the first page to refresh my memory about how to complete the stitch. This saved tons of time, and the process of writing it out helped me retain the steps a little better. I love your podcast. Thanks.

Do you have a link to where I could buy the ribbon magnet you were talking about using to keep your place in a pattern? That sounds so helpful! Thanks!!!

I love the podcast! Do you have any tips to make my knit socks look neater. I find using smaller needles help. When I finish the kitchener stitch. the last loop I pull the yarn through just says there. not very pretty looking. What are your sock tips?

Great question, Paul! We’ll try and answer it in the next podcast, so stay tuned!

Besides using my Kindle for PDFs of patterns, I also use the browser and the free wireless internet to access Ravelry and to look use online patterns that I’ve bookmarked. It’s certainly a useful little tool!

What a great podcast! I learned a lot about pattern resources and tips on publishing my OWN patterns. I haven’t reached that level yet, but I’m working on it. Thanks to KnitPurlGurl for sharing the podcast site with me!
